One of my favorite memories of Helen and Bill Carnahan took place, of course, during a visit on their porch one summer afternoon. Helen was talking about a group of friends that she’d had for many years. She brought out a photo of these women to show me, pointing to one woman and declaring that she was the prettiest. Bill disagreed. “Helen is the prettiest one of them all.” I looked at the picture of these lifelong friends, looked back up at Helen, and said, honestly, “I agree with Mr. Carnahan. She is beautifully groomed, but you’re the prettiest.” Mr.Carnahan smiled. They were— and remain in our hearts—dear, dear people.

Dear Blake, Sally, Sue, and Connie,
You are in our thoughts and prayers. We so loved sweet Helen. She was a lifelong friend and dear cousin. We will miss her great stories, infectious laughter, and love of family and life. She and your dad are now together and probably “on the road again”. We have such fond memories of the times spent with your family.
Hold each other close,
Love Bet and Jo

Helen Carnahan, my brother's beloved mother-in-law, was to me a living personification of a loving mother, grandmother, and, ultimately, great-grandmother. I was hardly privy to all the family struggles she endured, but of those I was aware she seemed almost to radiate a kindness, compassion, and understanding that gave sustenance to those needing an elder's guidance. And she bore the tribulations that were her lot with uncomplaining grace. I cannot imagine the feeling of loss that those near and dear to her must be experiencing, but be assured you have my most sincere condolences for your loss.

I have known my Aunt Helen since I was thirteen when my Dad married into the Carnahan family. She and Uncle Wilfred were truly part of our overall family ever since. My wife Lois and I have known her as a positive, loving, out-going person and have usually gotten to see her at least yearly in recent times. And she has been on my prayer list, of course. She will be missed by us and by many.

Helen was always full of fun and had such a lovely smile. I always looked forward to seeing her and Bill at the Murray Bettinger Reunions. We had some real nice conversations and I loved hearing about her teaching years ago at Kirkville School. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
