I worked with Paul at ESF for many years and he was one of my favorite faculty members and I would always look forward to seeing him in my office as he came in for the day. He was always smiling and had such a gentle and kind demeanor. He spoke often of you and your families and, of course, your mom. He would show off the new jackets that she created for him with the new serger he bought her for Christmas. I was happy to see her when she occasionally came in. She was just a lovely person. They seemed to be the perfect couple. During my time at ESF, around Christmas I would watch as your dad walked down the long hallway in the direction of my office with a small Christmas tree which he had gotten by cutting off the top of one of his trees on their tree farm. He’d plop it down in front of me and wished me a Merry Christmas with a big smile. My husband I began stopping by the tree farm at Christmas time where we would chat with your dad and your grandfather (with their ever present dog) and would cut down the perfect tree to bring home. We had to force him to take our money as he would always say that it was a gift. Paul was a wonderful, down to earth man with a kind soul and big heart. I only wish that I could be there for his memorial service but i have family obligations that night. I have never seen a more beautiful tribute to anyone as the one you created for your dad. May the memories and love you shared warm your hearts and comfort you in the days ahead until you all meet again. God bless you.

Paul and Nancy were the first neighbors we met when we moved to Bethel Road in June 2018. As nice a couple as you could ever meet. They invited us on walks with them in the woods with our dog and before they got Fergus (and after too). They loved the outdoors and the various seasons. I still look up at their window when I walk by, half expecting to see them and/or Fergus and waving. Paul's outlook on life (Life is Good) is one we would all be btter off to embrace it as he did. Miss you neighbor and say hello to Nancy for us. We are keeping tabs of Fergus and he is doing well tho no doubt misses hearing "Fergus, come" (in a very firm voice).

I am so sorry for your loss. I didn't know Paul well but met him as I was a sewing friend of Nancy's. They were both incredibly good and kind people. They truly made the world a better place.

To Paul's family I would like to offer my prayers and condolences. I only knew Paul briefly back in the mid 90s when I was involved with activities of the CNY chapter of the New York Forest Owners Association NYFOA. We asked Paul to lead a woods walk a couple of times to enlighten us on the life and times of fungal inhabitants of trees. He was always eager to respond and participate. He had a knack for keeping our attention on the subject with his witty articulation.
What a pleasure it was to hear Paul give presentations at NYFOA meetings.
I also enjoyed talking sawmill stuff with Paul, since we both owned WoodMizers.
God bless Paul's soul, and may he find eternal peace and happiness in that great heavenly forest beyond the sunset.

I am so sorry to hear of Paul Manion’s passing. He was a special person in my life. Paul Manion was the professor with true inspiration and spark that made my college education something special. I was a forest biology student 1969-1973 and took Paul’s two classes in tree pathology. These two classes and Paul’s excitement about pathology totally intrigued me about tree pathology. I was totally hooked! I continued on that career path for the rest of my life. I was able to pursue tree pathology as a professor at Colorado State University having the time of my life combining teaching, extension, and research. Paul was a “real person” and kind professor who helped young people figure out what was real and interesting by treating us a young adults and not as just students. I will be forever thankful for Paul’s help and interest in my career and for setting the ball rolling for a wonderful career and life. The attached picture is from 1972 when Paul took several of us on a decay conk collecting trip to the experimental forest so I could conduct a small research project.

Paul and I were both members of CAVAC ambulance in Cazenovia for many years. For a time he as an EMT, and me as a Driver served on the same Wednesday shift assisting patients under the leadership of the Paramedic.
Paul was great to work with - always upbeat and positive and focused on doing the best for the patient.
That photo in the obituary of Paul smiling is a perfect tribute to him.
I, personally, and CAVAC have experienced a tremendous loss.
With deepest sympathies to the family, John Stephenson

Having recently moved into the area I intended to meet my neighbors, Paul was the first. The day before he died he came to my house to talk about some walnut trees, and to give me some advice on what might be done with them. He agreed to process them for me in the spring. We then took a walk around me property, as he pointed out various types of trees and the maples he intended to tap this spring, and run the sap done to his sap house below. He promised me some syrup.
The next day I learned of his passing. I was deeply saddened, as in a short time we had become good friends. I was so looking forward to working with him on our new project; and enjoying time with him.

Paul and Nancy were the first neighbors we met when we moved to Cazenovia in 2018. In my 67 years, I have never had better neighbors. Our walks with our dogs, his lending a hand, their donating flowers and vegetables from their beautiful roadside garden, etc. I still and probably always will look in the window when I walk by to wave to him (and Nancy) and his beloved Fergus. Once he asked me for some computer help and to help him lift (some wood of course for a new sub floor base). I was more than happy to help because until that point, it was always him giving, now in some small manner I could reciprocate. Down to earth as they come. In going to his property in Dureyter in December to get a Xmas tree, we saw the property and the bridges and buildings built with his sons Ed and Will. I made the mistake of saying “that evergreen looks like it is on its death bed”. He then told me the exact name for the tree and how the disease was only on one side because he implanted the tree with it so he could show current ESF students who still would go to his property to learn in a real lab. RIP Paul and thanks for being our friend and neighbor, the street is a little more lonely without you.

We were acquainted with Paul as a great neighbor for 30 years, but as a friend and teacher of his many wood skills for the last year of his life. What an outstanding person! Paul was very active, always ready to hike with Fergus (his English Shepherd) our Aussie. People and dogs had a great time! The day before his passing we discussed plans to tap his maple trees. He was well read and great conversation about almost anything. He will be missed, but remembered always.

I was saddened to learn about Dr Manion’s passing. I was fortunate to have taken his advanced Forest Pathology classes as an undergraduate and he served on my Doctoral committee. The best thing about him was that he was down to earth and direct- no question about where you stood. When I was writing my dissertation, he ripped up my first draft rather heavily and I was not pleased. But I came to realise that he was pushing me to do better and I am grateful for his efforts. I now also have far more sympathy for him as he dealt with my not so good draft. I am still in awe of all of my teachers at Syracuse in that they valued teaching and worked hard to help us succeed. It is a strategy I have tried to emulate even amidst the changing university priorities. I had occasion to talk with him about 2 years ago and he seemed to be enjoying life to the fullest- which is all we can ask. As we say here, Vale Paul Manion

I was a colleague of Paul at SUNYESF for many years, at which I was fortunate enough to lecture in his forest pathology course; and honored to teach it when he retired. We shared many lectures and attended many meetings together. I shall always remember him fondly.
