Longtime Cazenovia resident Katherine Louise (Stanley) Freeborn died June 1st at Crouse Community Center in Morrisville. She was 92. Katherine (Kate) was born August 7, 1920, the daughter of Avery and Olive Hughes Stanley. Her mother raised her after her father died of tuberculosis in 1923, with the help of her mother's parents with whom they resided in Fenner. Kate graduated from Cazenovia Central School in 1938. It was during her high school days that she met Gurdin Freeborn, and they were married in 1940. Gurdin went to war shortly after their marriage, and Kate worked for Crouse Hinds during that time. Upon his return, they moved to Binghamton where Gurdin went to work for City Oil, now Citgo. They moved back to Cazenovia in 1945 where they resided at 22 Hurd Street. Gurdin then went to work for General Electric for 29 years. After his retirement, he worked for Clark Real Estate which later became Longley Jones, where he was the office manager. During Kate's lifetime, she worked at Dwyer's Pharmacy in Cazenovia and also at the Theobold & Hole Drug Store in Cazenovia. She was a lifelong member of, and very active in, the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia where she was a member of the Leonard Circle and sang in the choir. She volunteered at The Key and CazCares; belonged to the Willow Bank Yacht Club and the Cazenovia Golf Club; and participated in the Cazenovia Community Chorus, the Cazenovia Dance Club and the singing group 4 and 4. She and Gurdin loved to travel, spend time at Raquette Lake, play golf, and sail. Above all, she loved to spend time with her family, her daughters, Karen Kenyon and her husband Robert, Judy Sutherland and her husband Terry, and Suzann Davies and her husband Randy; her grandchildren Matthew Sutherland and Elizabeth and Elisha Davies; her many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren. At Kate's request, there will be no calling hours or services. She will be buried next to her husband in Evergreen Cemetery in Cazenovia.
