Captain Peter Christ was a ray of hope in the most corrupt, politicized police department in Western New York, the Town of Tonawanda Police. Unfortunately his wingman status with the Chief dissolved and he was assigned to a tiny desk beside the depts Xerox machine. He retired at 20 years which was unheard of in those days. Pete went on a tireless crusade to rid the state of draconian marijuana laws, while the TTPD sank further into turmoil and criminality, with a half dozen officers and paramedics charged criminally or fired, and a disgraced chief of police forced out. Rest easy Pete.

Peter Christ was a wise man who promulgated a lesson in empathy and understanding taught to him by his father. Peter spoke of “looking in the mirror” when you look at a fellow human being. He along with four other retired police officers formed Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), an international nonprofit educational organization that sought to end the War on Drugs. Peter spoke of “morality policing” as cause of a subverted policing mission. And he spoke in those terms recommending a book written by a former fellow LEAP director, myself, “The Silver Bullet Solution, Is it time to end the War on Drugs?” These were Peter’s words: “Gierach recognizes that making drugs a federal, state or local law enforcement matter mistakenly transforms policing into ‘morality policing,’ subverting the policing mission, and criminalizing consensual adult behavior that is not a crime.”
__Peter Christ, Retired Police Captain Town of Tonawanda Police Department, N.Y. and co-founder of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), now known as Law Enforcement Action Partnership (LEAP).
Bless you and yours, the Honorable Peter Christ, Peace Officer.

Peter was a good man. He lent his credibility as a former police officer who had seen it all to his tireless work in ending the misguided "War on Drugs". He was an excellent speaker on behalf of saner harm reduction policies and changed many minds. Thank you Peter for your service as a law officer in keeping us all safer and and for your efforts in bringing enlightenment to many about the harms of prohibition and the many lives that were damaged by it.
