Dr Cote-wil was a teacher and person who placed a high value on ensuring that all who interacted with him were made comfortable and confident that their well being was foremost in his thoughts . He was ever providing encouragement and advice that facilitated the scholarly advancement of his students and he and Irene opened their hearts and home to these students. I am sure that I am among the many who cherish fond memories of these act of kindness and thoughtfulness

We were very saddened to hear of Will’s death. We have been pleased to have a connection to your family through our daughter, Jen. We have fond memories of the times in Maine at the farm, making crepes for breakfast, going fishing on Jones pond, and then of course, Jen and Matt’s wedding. We so enjoyed Will’s sense of humor and congeniality. We will be thinking of your entire family this weekend.

Dear Irene, Janet and I were saddened today to hear from Len Smith that Wil had passed away. We pray that you are experiencing that ‘peace that passeth all understanding’ as your family and friends gather with you at this time. What a long and wonderful time we have had knowing you and Wil. First, in the early 1960’s when Dr. Wilfred A. Cote Jr. was my Major Professor for the Ph.D. program. He really did launch my career on the faculty at Oregon State University. But we fondly remember those good times with your family on Fellows Ave. I’ll never forget that opportunity to help paint the exterior of that tall house; my position seemed to be on the extension ladder at the highest peak. Later, when you visited Corvallis, OR, we can clearly recall the great sightseeing trips to Crater Lake and the vineyards in the Willamette Valley. After you moved to your home on Brooklane, we still enjoyed your wonderful hospitality on the trips to the east coast. Wil and I retired the same year, 1991, but we still had the opportunity to visit after our son and family moved to Liverpool, NY. You and Wil would drive out to visit us at their place and we could go to some nearby restaurant and reminisce about the ‘old days’. Thank you for having Len inform us of Wil’s passing. We send our sincere condolences to you and your family. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity see you again on one of our trips to Liverpool.

Condolences to Wil Cote family from Southwest Idaho. I met Wil when he gave a guest lecture at the U of Idaho about 1966. His personality and his research field were the reasons I became his graduate student from 1968 and 1972. lorraine and I enjoyed our time in Syracuse. She worked in the lab with Arnold Day. I am appreciative of the opportunity to study under Dr. Cote. The knowledge gained from Wil is still useful today.

My condolences to the Cote family, who have demonstrated love and peace to those around them. I met the Cote family in 1964 when I arrived in Syracuse to work under Wil for my doctoral degree. My time in Syracuse was wonderful--including a picnic at the Cote house on 600 Fellows Avenue. Thank you for sharing Wil with us. We will have a chance to share again in Heaven.

Dearest Irene: We were very sorry to hear that Wil passed away. We know the recent years have been a difficult time for you and your family. I remember Wil dearly as my freshman advisor, my undergraduate instructor for microtechnique, photomicrography and electron microscopy, and as my Ph.D. advisor. I will always remember his gently pushing me to excel while encouraging me with the words "you do nice work." We will cherish the visits with you and Wil at your place in Maine and with the Nuttings - great memorable times. While Wil's academic and professional accomplishments were spectacular, how he cared for his family was no less spectacular. We know he was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wil was a true pioneer in the field of electron microscopy and wood ultrastructure, along with such people as Walter Liese (Germany), Hiroshi Harada (Japan), Alan Wardrop (Australia), and others. He rose to the top of his field as the President of the International Academy of Wood Science and as Executive Secretary of the International Association of Wood Anatomists. I am truly glad that I was able to pay tribute to Wil in my book "A Compilation of Micrographs on Wood and Wood Products." I feel honored to have been one of his students. We wish you well as you surround yourself with family and friends to remember Wil. With our love, Norm and Lois

Dear Irene & family, Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the passing of my favorite ESF teacher (what a teacher he was). His enthusiasm and kindness was an inspiration to all of his students--the profession will miss him greatly. Please accept the sentiment below--it has always help us in times like these. Mike & Martha Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free I am following the path God laid for me I took his hand when I heard his call I turned my back and left it all I could not stay another day To laugh, to love, to work, or play Tasks left undone must stay that way I found that peace at the close of day If my parting has left a void Then fill it with remembered joy A friendship showed, a laugh, a kiss Ah yes, these things I too will miss Be not burdened with time of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow My life’s been full, I savored much Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch Perhaps my time seemed all too brief Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief Lift up your heart and share with me God wanted me now he set me free

There are too many memories to count: the poolside BBQs, the Christmas mornings, celebrations of my birthdays, wedding, and graduations. Attendance at my dance recitals, band and choir performances, and shows. The list goes on and on. I am so blessed to have had him as such an intricate part of my life. All of the memories will keep him close in our hearts for generations to come.

Dear Irene, Your Wil shall remain in our hearts and minds as a very good man. His closeness to family and friend, excellent use of his talents and devotion to his God and Church will be inspirational everytime we think about your both. And we think about you everytime we use the beautiful wooden lazy-susan you gave us our first Christmas with the St. Thomas Moore Foundation. And without you, he seemed only half the man in life's equation. A wonderful couple you are. May God bless you and your family now and with Eternal Life.

Dear Family of Wil Coté, Please accept my heartfelt condolences with Wil's demise. I knew Wil from the seventies onwards when he was at the apex of his brilliant career as wood scientist, and I was honoured to become his successor as Executive Secretary of the International Association of Wood Anatomists in 1976. Wil had been instrumental in revitalising and reforming the Association, and it was a pleasure for me to build on his sound foundations. We are planning to publish an obituary in the IAWA Journal. Apart from being such an inspiring colleague, Wil also was a wonderful person, whom we all will remember fondly in the international wood anatomical community, Wishing you much strength in these difficult times, Pieter Baas Professor Emeritus, Leiden University Editor of the IAWA Journal (successor to Wil's IAWA Bulletin)
