Obituary of Anne Hartt-Barbey

Anne Hartt - Barbey of Cazenovia, N.Y., died Jan. 4. She was 89. Ms. Hartt - Barbey was married for 50 years to Dudley N. Hartt, Jr., who died in January 2003. They retired to Cazenovia in 1980 after residing in Rochester, N.Y., and then Springfield and Wilbraham, Mass. They also lived part-time in Castletownshend, Ireland, after retirement. Ms. Hartt - Barbey was born Jan 19, 1925, in Aarau, Switzerland, to Jean W. and Suzanne Madeleine Junod Barbey. She was brought to the U.S. as a young child. Ms. Hartt - Barbey graduated from the Thomas School in Darien Conn., and Smith College in Northhampton, Mass., in 1947. She later attended the Katherine Gibbs School in New York before working for the American Academy of Rome's office in New York and later the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris. Ms. Hartt - Barbey was active in church, civic, and charitable activities in all of the communities in which she lived. In Cazenovia, she worked tirelessly with friends for land preservation. She was a parishioner of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and later the First Presbyterian Church. She also belonged to the Syracuse Garden Club and the Cazenovia Club. In Castletownshend, Ms. Hartt - Barbey was a parishioner of St. Barrahane's Anglican Church and a member of its church council. In Springfield and its neighboring town of Wilbraham, where the Hartts lived for 25 years, Ms. Hartt - Barbey was president of the Springfield Day Nursery, a member of the board of directors of the Springfield Hospital, chair of the Wilbraham Conservation Commission and chair of the Women's Council of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Wilbraham. Ms. Hartt - Barbey leaves her daughter, Madeleine; son, Edmund; nephew, Michael Hartt Stearns; and nieces Alix Barbey, and Bettina, Caroline, Elaina, and Susan Norden. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on January 17 at the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia. Interment will be in South Cemetery in Cazenovia near her husband and his parents, Dudley N. Hartt, Sr., and Katherine Barbour Hartt Channing. Memorial contributions may be made to CAVAC, P.O. Box 56, Cazenovia, N.Y., 13035.
