Eulogy For Deborah K. Murray
By Matthew Murray
St. James Church, Cazenovia, New York
October 6, 2016
Good Day to all. Welcome.
The challenge of course is to live a life of one’s own choosing.
To make and master one’s own choices and to bring this discipline to the day-to-day.
To create and adopt good habits of thought, of mind, of action.
This is what we know as character.
And this is what our mother, grandmother, friend and mentor, Deborah Kassor Murray, exemplified – strength of character.
As my mother turned the final corner of the life she had chosen, she several copies of the book, Gift from the Sea, by Ann Morrow Lindbergh. And she gave the book to her children, grandchildren, nieces nephews, and friends.
In this book , as you may know, the author speaks of how to find and lead a fulfilled life, how to simplify one’s choices, how to focus on the relationships that are of primary importance to you, how to tune out the noise of urbanity and receive the gift of nature.
Deb shared this book widely, I think, because this is the life that she aspired to and did indeed lead.
As Lindberg says, “There are in fact certain roads that one may follow. Simplification of life is one of them.”
And so my mother’s life was itself a gift to us.
Which is why every conversation with her was a form of prayer, time spent with her was a retreat, a period of meditation.
And importantly, Deborah did not preach, but she practiced. And your struggle was her struggle.
As Lindbergh speaks, you can almost hear my mother’s voice:
“Don’t wish me happiness. I don’t expect to be happy all the time. I’ve gotten beyond that somehow. Wish me courage and strength. And a sense of humor. We will need them all.”
At a young age -- on a trip home from college – I once asked my mother, “You taught us about love and how to love. But what about all the hatred in the world?”
In response, she said, “This was the choice that your father and I made.” After a pause, she then offered me this advice, “Whatever happens in your life son, ‘do not fear’. Fear itself is a form of death. Be brave and chose life.”
And so, though a life well-led, through her choices, my mother discovered and kept the good in herself and she saw and developed it in all others.

Lil and I just learned of Debby's passing. We are deeply saddened by this news. We knew Debby and Ray for over 40 years. While we lived in the downstate area, we always lòoked forward to the yearly meeting of the New York Management Attorneys group of which Ray and I, Peter, were members. For thhe period from 2002 until we left in 2014, we enjoyed Sea Oaks in Vero Beach. We know all of Debby and Ray's sons and some of their wives, and to all them, including those we never met, we send our love and our deepest condolences. With love and deep affection. Lil and Peter.

To all the Murray family,
Sending love and prayers on the passing of your mother and grandmother.
I will always remember Debbie as a warm, wonderful, skilled woman who welcomed me to Syracuse by hosting a wedding shower, and was there for me when times were challenging.
Blessings.

I just received word of Debbie's passing and did not want a minute to go by without acknowledging my sense of loss with this recent news. Debbie, and husband Ray, were close friends of my parents through the years. But when I began to spend more time back in Caz caring for my mom is when I began to know Debbie as a compassionate woman, devoted and a (very) proud mother, someone who enjoyed life to the fullest. Her warm smile and gentle sensitivity to those around her made one feel quite special in her busy world.
This message is sent to her immediate family with the deepest sorrow. It was fortunate that you all could comfort her during her final hours - very special. May you find peace in the fact that she lived a full life and touched many hearts ... and even enjoyed one more trip to Truro this summer - that was magical!

For the Murray family, we want you to know how sad we are to hear about Debbie. She was absolutely a wonderful woman, fantastic friend, and a heart-warming person to know. We loved the way she "looked at life" with such enthusiasm, joy and understanding. We know she will be missed by all of her family members as well as by her many friends and acquaintances.
Actually it was because of her and Ray's enthusiasm for life in Florida that we eventually ended up near them there..and for that we thank them both. We wish the best for all the family in this time of sorrow.

The world has lost an incredible human being. Debbie's obituary absolutely captured the "essence" of her spirit.Beautiful. Debbie was my second mother, friend and best mentor that anyone could ever wish for. I feel honored and thankful that Debbie and her family have been such an important part of my life and therefor my childrens' and grand children' lives also.
She will be missed by all that were fortunate enough to be touched by her.
