Well, here it is over 6 months later and Bob's old church group from Hilton Head Island, SC remembers. We would have coffee, donuts, discussions of timely, usually church-related subjects and enjoy the included fellowship. And, many of us played golf together--that wasn't as pretty. Now, decades later, I've personally developed the same sort of putting yips that Bob fought in later hears. He was a good man in every single way and will be missed.

I worked with Bob at CIS. He was a class act. We traveled to Bermuda together for a business meeting and had a great time. Bob could handle himself in any situation:

Everyone so often you cross paths with someone who has a great influence on your life. For me. Bob was that man. I was a young manager who had just moved my family up to IBM's Syracuse office when, thru a consolidation of divisions from 3 to 2, Bob "inherited me". From the outset he treated me with dignity and respect and included me as part of his team. He told me something that stayed with me for life that I used many times myself with co-workers and my children. He brought me into his office....customary feet up on his desk and smoking a cigar,,,,and said to me "Mavro (that is what he called me), don't make decisions until you have to". What wise advice. He clearly saw as a new manager I was "rushing" decisions. That piece of advice is with me to this day and has "saved" me many times. It's like a Mantra to our 4 kids.
He was the consummate professional, team builder, and leader. And lots of fun as well!
His legacy will live on with me and all the other people Bob influenced. It was an honor to have know him.

My deepest sympathy to Sam and the Horstmyer Family. I have many fond memories of the years spent working with Bob at IBM. I am grateful for all the knowledge and guidance he gave me. The most important part of my job took place on New Year’s Eve. All the paper work had to be processed to make sure the Branch made the “Club” and also that Bob had a good cigar to smoke on January 1. Rest In Peace Bob.

Although we have been gone from Cazenovia for 15 years, we remember him clearly as a very nice man and one who was accepting of those around him and their interests. Our condolences go out to Elaine and the family, particularly to Stephanie, who is a year older than our daughter.

To Sam and the entire Horstmyer Family … please accept my sincere condolences. Horse was a true mentor for me, he changed my life. Horse, Frank Parisi, and IBM had a profound positive impact on my life, for which I will forever be grateful. I am one of those who owes a huge debt to Bob Horstmyer both personally and professionally. I’m so sorry about his passing. Bob Hughes

Horse was a dear friend and former respected boss. Many fond memories of work and non-work. Recall many advice moments in the "corner pocket" as he shared his wisdom with young recruits, as he built a great CNY Team. Work hard play hard was his mantra, and we did just that.
In later years Charter Mercs got to share more time with him, sharing cherished memories.
God bless Sam, Steve, Lisa, Dave and Karen & Families. We share your loss.

My condolences to the family and friends for the loss of Bob.
I always enjoyed having Bob (Horse) as our IBM Branch manager. I worked out of Elmira/Endicott. He worked diligently to ensure the various locations of Utica, Elmira, Endicott, Syracuse and the "North Country" were able to interact.
I remember the Branch Office meetings, the Trip to Lake Placid, picnics, Christmas meetings and many other meetings. He was an excellent manager in many ways. After retirement, he was at the IBM reunions. I will miss him, but I will think of him even more.
